After School Program
Does your child need help with homework? A place to hang out after school? A place to play?
Monday through Friday (3:30 – 5:30 PM) every week when school is in session, our staff and volunteers provide homework assistance, snacks, and playtime for neighborhood students ages 6-13. Spaces are available for quiet work time.
Summer Enrichment Camp
Six young boys and ten young girls joined us for a week each to enjoy the Peace Center Summer Enrichment Camp. Field trips included the Global Wildlife Center, Rosaryville Spirit and Life Center where they enjoyed swimming, canoeing and indoor games, Rock n’ Bowl, and NOPD Mounted Police stables in City Park. Visitors included Sally Farrell from Winds in Our Feathers, NOPD officers, and Tracy Thomas – perfume maker.
As well as activities and fun, camp also presented a more serious theme for the children – peace building. On day one of camp, the campers made and signed a contract as to how they would act more peacefully and kindly during the week. They were asked to write in their journal throughout the week as to where and how they would be peacemakers. By the end of the week they formulated their remarks, and those remarks hang in the front windows of the center. An example: “I will try to be a peace builder in the world by not judging others and standing up for others that are being picked on.”
Isaiah 43 Project
The Isaiah 43 Project, through Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, works with local parishes and schools to provide parenting skills classes. The Peace Center assists at St. Rita School with volunteers who provide meals, child care and activities for the children.
